NEWTON PUBLIC LIBRARY: Newton Police Department Welcome Four New Officers

Merchant Movies at the Strand issued the following announcement on July 2.

Since April, the Newton Police Department has welcomed four new officers.

Officer Van Manen is a Newton native and served 4 years in the US Army as a Fire Support Specialist. He was stationed at Fort Hood, TX and his service included deployments to the Middle East. He will complete the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy soon

Officer Latcham is a Des Moines native and has prior public safety experience as a correctional officer at the NCF and as a reserve police officer with the Knoxville Police Department.  He studied at Des Moines Area Community College majoring in Criminal Justice and will complete the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy soon.

Officer Shinkle is a 2016 graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and served 4 years as a municipal police officer in central Iowa and 5 years as a Security Forces Specialist in the US Air Force. Andrew is a certified drug recognition expert, field sobriety test instructor, bike patrol officer and field training officer. He also earned a bachelors degree from Bellevue University.

Officer Stombaugh is a 2015 graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and served 10 years as a municipal police officer in eastern Iowa and 4 years as a correctional officer. Matthew is a certified field sobriety test instructor, field training officer and DARE instructor.
