Following the cancellation of the Iowa State Fair due to COVID-19 concerns, three central Iowa counties are stepping up to facilitate shows so that 4H and FFA students will still have a place to showcase their work.
Jasper, Story and Warren Counties will host 4H and FFA shows.
Jerry Elscott, Jasper County Fair organizer, said they have had to cancel some events that would draw crowds and sponsors, but it is necessary to enforce social distancing guidelines.
"Our other activities like mutton busting, rodeos and stuff like that, it's not possible with the seating arrangements for the crowds we bring in,” Elscott said to KCCI.
The number of participants in the show arena and exhibit area will be limited.
Elscott said he hopes the fair gives local kids something fun to do in the middle of a pandemic.
“We really need to showcase our kids of the county to where they can show their projects and at least have a little fun on this COVID summer,” Elscott said.
Iowa State Fair organizers told KCCI they also plan on hosting 4H and FFA shows this summer.
