The Jasper County Board of Supervisors accepted a private developer's $15,000 bid to purchase the historical county annex building.
Fairmount Development has proposed turning the building into housing units. The 92-year-old annex building would be converted into one and two, possibly three-bedroom apartments. The units would be income restricted, according to the Newton Daily News.
Originally, the Jasper County Annex Building served as the Newton Post Office and the Jasper County Jail. The building is an example of 1930s art deco architecture. Because the building is considered historical, it will most likely retain its exterior architectural features and be restored to its original appearance.
Fairmount Development Group is seeking a grant for the multi-housing project. Without it, they will not have the funds to purchase the property and will have to look for other funding sources.
Both the mayor and city council are in favor of the project. Newtown City Council approved a resolution offering non-monetary support if the developer completes the purchase of the building.
Newtown Mayor Mike Hansen is in favor of repurposing the building while also adding to downtown housing. The Newtown Historic Preservation Committee also offered its support of the project.
The annex building currently houses county staff who will soon be relocated into the NewCare Health Services clinic.
