View the 1985 Metropolitan Opera Performance Free of Charge
Dr. Simon Estes' 1985 Performance of Verdi's "Aida" with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City will be rebroadcast, free of charge, for 23 hours beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT on Fri., May 1.
Estes, a native of Centerville, Iowa, is a Visiting Professor of Music at DMACC.
The Simon Estes School of Fine Arts at DMACC is named after Dr. Estes.
In January 1985, legendary bass-baritone Dr. Simon Estes, an Iowa native and DMACC Visiting Professor of Music, performed the role of Amonasro in Verdi's opera "Aida" to great acclaim with New York City's Metropolitan Opera.
And now audiences can enjoy that performance once again – for a limited time.
The 1985 performance of "Aida" featuring Estes will be streamed, free of charge, from 6:30 p.m. CT on Fri., May 1, until 5:30 p.m. CT on Sat., May 2, on the homepage of the Metropolitan Opera's website, www.metopera.org.
The rebroadcast is part of the Metropolitan Opera's newly launched “Nightly Met Opera Streams" series, which provides free, Live in HD encore presentations streamed on the opera's website during its closure due to COVID-19. Each encore presentation is available for 23 hours.
“We hope that in this extremely difficult and challenging time the beauty of these operas will help to raise morale world-wide and warm many hearts," said Diane Zola, Metropolitan Opera Artistic Assistant General Manager.
Estes, who has taught at DMACC for many years, is also the namesake of the new Simon Estes School of Fine Arts at DMACC, launched in 2019 on the DMACC Ankeny Campus.
“We are so proud of Simon, his unparalleled career, and all the work he does for our students of DMACC," said Dr. James Thompson, DMACC Music Program Chair.
