At 10:51 PM on 8/22/2022 the Grinnell Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire at 1997 T-38 S #40 in Jasper County. On arrival, there was heavy fire coming from the garage and heavy smoke from the roof of the house. Everyone was out of the house due to the actions of their neighbor. Matt and Rachael Vandevoort and their two children, aged 6 & 9, were awakened by neighbor, Andrew Hoopes. Hoopes witnessed the fire coming from the back of the house and went over and knocked on the door to alert the family.
The fire destroyed the two-car attached garage, including one car, but firefighters were able to stop the fire with it only getting into the mud room and attic of the house. However, the home will still be uninhabitable until repairs due to heavy smoke damage throughout the home are complete. Damages are estimated at $175,000. Cause of the fire is still under investigation. 18 Grinnell Firefighters responded and were assisted on scene by Sully & Kellogg Fire Departments, Jasper County Sheriff's Office and Midwest Ambulance.
