Gas Plant Remediation Project Begins on March 1

361

City of Newton recently issued the following announcement.

The City of Newton’s environmental remediation project at the former manufactured gas plant site at 518 W 3rd St N will begin on March 1, 2022.

Arrowhead Contracting of Indianola, Iowa, anticipates mobilizing equipment to the site that day, with excavation and site work occurring over several weeks. Residents in the general vicinity of this site may notice occasional odors as the work progresses. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has directed the City on this project after numerous rounds of IDNR-required testing at the site over the last 30 years.

The former gas plant operated from 1911 through the late 1940s, providing manufactured gas to Newton customers before propane or natural gas availability. The two remaining buried structures on the site used as part of the manufacturing process (the gasometer and relief holder) are the main focus of the remediation project. The contractor will expose the two structures; contents inside the structures will be removed and disposed of, and the contractor will clean the interiors of both structures. The contractor will fill both structures with clean material per the IDNR-approved remediation plan.

The City of Newton will be utilizing the services of Terracon Consultants of Des Moines during the project to provide environmental oversight and ensure the implementation of the IDNR-approved plan. For further information, please contact the City of Newton’s Community Services Director, Brian Laube, at 641-792-6622 x 2302.
