Post Fall Break COVID-19 Testing Guidance

Covidd

Grinnell College issued the following announcement on October 25.

As you return from fall break we understand there may be concerns about COVID-19 and possible exposures during your travels. There are many factors to consider when determining when a test may be warranted so please refer to these guidelines before deciding to test:

Vaccinated students who do not have any symptoms and have not had a confirmed exposure are recommended not to test upon return to campus.

Please utilize this calculator to determine the appropriate use of testing and the probability of false positives in vaccinated populations with low prevalence of the virus. Example: selecting Poweshiek County, vaccinated, exposure of public transportation, no symptoms, and an antigen test shows that 2 will have incorrectly tested positive. 98 would have correctly tested negative.

  • The SHAW Walk-In COVID Testing Clinic is appropriate if you are experiencing minor symptoms such as a runny nose, mild sore throat, and slight cough.
  • If you are experiencing more significant symptoms such as fever greater than 100F, a sore throat that makes it hard to swallow, heavy cough, or loss of taste or smell you should schedule an appointment with a SHAW nurse immediately. These symptoms may require additional tests and support that the walk-in clinic does not provide.
  • If you learn that you had a confirmed exposure to a positive case (15 minutes or more cumulatively in 24 hours at less than 6 feet while unmasked) over break contact SHAW for more guidance on follow-up testing.
