Celebrate Banned Books Week

Books

Grinnell College issued the following announcement on September 23.

Please join the Grinnell College Libraries to celebrate Banned Books Week, Sept. 26–Oct. 2, 2021, by checking out our selected collection of banned/challenged books, recordings, and films on the book display near the Peer Mentoring Study Spaces on first floor.

Each year, the American Library Association (ALA) celebrates the freedom to read during Banned Books Week (Sept. 26–Oct. 2, 2021) by highlighting books that have been challenged and banned across the nation. The ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has been collecting data since 1990 to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools, and the OIF puts out an annual report of the “Top 10 Most Challenged Books” for that year. This display is just a small sample of the hundreds of books that have been challenged over the past twenty years.

This display was created by MJ Old ’23. They are a third-year biology and classics major and work as a mend/bind student in Burling Library.
