Oskaloosa Chamber And Dev Group recently issued the following announcement.
Date: September 27, 2021,5:30 pm
Activities and family time combine for learning and fun in the Raising School Ready Readers program coming to Oskaloosa this fall as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach- Mahaska County is offering a series of family literacy activity nights for parents and children ages 3-6. The program gives parents ready-to-use ideas on how to turn everyday experiences--like fixing meals, giving baths, or riding in the car--into learning activities.
“We know parents with children this age wonder how to get their child on a path to be successful in school and become a good reader,” said Suzette Striegel, ISU Extension and Outreach- Mahaska County. “We are excited to offer this program because it helps busy parents discover simple ways to help turn everyday routines and experiences into learning opportunities for reading and writing skills.”
The Raising School Ready Readers program can help parents prepare their children to succeed in school and gain independence while having fun together as a family. Sessions focus on developing six core literacy areas: Concepts of Print, Phonological Awareness, Letter-Sound Knowledge, Oral Language, Comprehension and Writing.
Striegel indicated, “The kids really love coming to the sessions because they play games and spend time with their parents, while parents are learning and practicing easy techniques to help their children become successful readers and writers”.
The five weekly sessions are scheduled for Mondays September 27, October 4,11,18 & 25. Each session will begin at 5:30 pm at the Mahaska County Extension Office “We know families are busy, so our motto is come as much as you can and miss when you must. It’s worth it even if you have to miss a session,” said Striegel.
There will be light refreshments provided at each session and sibling care is available. Cost is $5 per family. Registration and payment are due by September 20. The registration form is available at the Mahaska County Extension office, 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa or http://www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska .
