Some local legislators aren’t happy about a new law that allows guns in public spaces, Iowa Public Radio reported.
Gov. Kim Reynolds passed the law, led by the Republican party, on June 25, bringing it into effect on July 1.
Chair of the Hamilton Board of Supervisors, Doug Bailey, said he’s not a fan of guns in county courthouses.
“It’s really difficult to understand how the common good is served by this legislation,” Bailey told Iowa Public Radio. “In the larger counties and cities, some already have in place the monitoring at the doors, but counties the size of Hamilton certainly have not. And cities the size of Webster City have not.”
He said there are a variety of offices in the county building, like the sheriff’s office, that is expected to intervene with any issues in the building. Still, the new legislation calls for more security, which he said is an additional cost the state isn’t helping pay.
