Iowa's unemployment rate dropped more than two full percentage points from May to June, registering at a seasonally-adjusted 8%.
The number of out-of-work residents decreased from May's estimated 173,000 to 131,200 for June. That current figure, however, is still 84,000 higher than the June 2019 level.
"The decline in the unemployment rate by two percentage points in June is welcome news after several months of historically high rates of unemployment," Beth Townsend, director of Iowa Workforce Development (IWD), said in a release issued by her organization. "Moving out of double-digit unemployment is a tremendously positive good sign for our economic recovery as businesses reopen and Iowans return to work. Iowa employers are hiring and we have over 50,000 job postings at www.IowaWORKS.gov."
Most economic sectors of the state's economy showed increase from May to June. The leisure and hospitality industries added 23,000 employees during that period. Education and health services increased by 8,900 positions, and manufacturing gained 3,000 jobs. Data on every sector can be viewed here.
