Iowa residents will have an additional 40 days to cast their votes in the June primary after Secretary of State Paul Pete issued this directive.
The move comes as the spread of the COVID-19 virus threatens to disrupt the upcoming primary.
The additional time was a response to a request for people to cast their ballots through the mail and the time it would take the county auditors sufficient time to respond, according to Newton Daily News.
Speaking to the press, Paul Pete mentioned the health and well-being of Iowans as the priority. For those who prefer to cast ballots in-person, Pete mentioned that the polls would be open on June 2 to accommodate them.
The mailed ballots absentee voting period will begin on April 23, and any request should be directed towards the county editor through the official website, voterready.iowa.gov.
Those who might experience difficulties accessing the polling place or people with disabilities will still be able to use curbside voting.
